Know Your Teacher : Mrs. Rukmani (Prema) Srinivasan

I am Rukmani (Prema) Srinivasan born in Vellore in 1937 to Jayalakshmi, a homemaker and Vaidyanathan Iyer, a self-made man who was a gold medalist in SSLC and later pursued a career in management. He was a Rotarian. My mother had studied upto SSLC in the 1930s which was a rarity. My father did his graduation and post graduation in his seventies after retirement since he had to fend for himself and his family having lost his father at an early age. He completed his MA in World History at the age of 78.

I always had a passion for and interest in the field of medicine but in the orthodox atmosphere that I was brought up in, I was not allowed to pursue my studies after school.
Our family shifted to Mumbai in the 1940s and I completed my schooling there. I have a flair for languages and I studied Hindi from the Hindi Prachar Sabha, Wardha and completed the 4th  level of “Kovid”. I am fluent in English, Hindi, Marathi and of course in Tamil which is my mother tongue. I can also speak Malayalam.

After marriage, I lived in Trivandrum for about 4 years and later we shifted to Pune in 1961 since my husband got transferred. He is Mr. Srinivasan, a retired Director, Indian Meteorological Service where he specialized in radar and instruments for safe landing of aircrafts involving a stint abroad as an UN Expert, World Meteorological Service, Geneva.

I have two daughters – Usha and Sudha – both settled in Pune and we are a very close-knit family. I have one grandson – Lalit – who presently lives in USA.

Both my husband and myself are now actively involved in the Poona Sangeetha Sabha since both of us are very fond of Carnatic Classical Music. Besides we are involved in various social activities which involve spirituality too. We are actively associated with the Sringeri Shankar Math - Paud Road, Kanchi Shankar Math – Swargate, Harihara Bhajan Samajam – Rasta Peth and Shanmukhananda Sabha – Rasta Peth. I am also an active member of a Lalita Sahasranama Mandali with 88 other ladies.

I am a voracious reader and I love reading books on various subjects including the field of medicine. My interest in the field of medicine made me do a correspondence course in homeopathy which enabled me to take care of my family’s needs from time to time.

I am happy to be associated with Vibrant Energies and I am looking forward to meeting you. I will be conducting the “Mantra Circle” to create an awareness about the power of our age-old “Mantras” and to enable one and all to use them effectively to enhance the quality of our lives. I will also touch upon an introduction to “Mudras”. I will also be leading the “bhajan” and “meditation” sessions. My second daughter, Sudha, is also part of the team at Vibrant Energies.
